“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
- Abraham Lincoln
MANY PEOPLE OF THE LEFT insist that the modern world is undeniably different from anything the founders could have ever imagined. The United States must, therefore, grow, adapt, and evolve to meet the demands of the world around it – not merely to remain among the elite nations of the world, but, moreover, to survive. In this Darwinian survival of the fittest world, it is quite obvious that the United States would, similar to the rest of the world, be far beyond anything the founders could have ever conceived; therefore, it follows that we should not so foolishly embrace the founders’ traditional aspirations of what America should become.
Unfortunately, the Left’s entire argument for an evolving America derives itself from a false premise. The truth of the matter is that the world is, in fact, no different than it was on July 4, 1776. Certainly, over the course of the last 230 years we have seen both great and horrific moments in history, exciting and innovative new technologies, and numerous other things that have changed the face of the world, but that is all that has changed – the face.
On the outside, the world today is indeed unimaginable to the founders. At its core, on the other hand, the world is exactly as they left it: still filled with a multitude of different conflicting nations and people. We continue to have disputes over everything. We continue to make war. We continue to make peace. We continue to try to make the world a better place. Power, money, lust, love, good and evil are all still among our greatest influences. The world, human nature in particular, has not changed one bit. The only thing that has actually changed is America itself, and not just on the surface. The very core of our great nation, the values and principles established by the brilliant founding fathers, has been slowly drifting astray from what they intended – all in the name of what the Left dictates a modern evolving nation to be.
The founding fathers set out to create a nation based on certain principles and values that they believed were of the greatest significance. We have all heard lists of such values: life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, et cetera. They saw such rights as unalienable and bestowed upon us from God. Furthermore, because the founders had such a seemingly unprecedented understanding of human nature and the world in general, they established a government designed, ultimately, to protect against infringement of those rights.
This understanding of human nature and acknowledgement of inalienable rights from God (meaning the government does not give the rights to us, therefore they cannot take them away) is what has made the United States so very unique – so revolutionary. What has made our country so blessed is not the fact that we established a democratic form of government. The Greeks did so centuries ago. America, however, took democratic government a step further by establishing limits on government power, even in the instance of a majority opinion. We officially embraced the notion for the first time in human history that the government serves the people and not vice versa.
To maintain such a revolutionary government, America’s founding fathers set up a government with safeguards to limit its power over the governed. In Federalist number 51, James Madison wrote about the creation of such a government:
“In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: You must first enable government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself.”
The safeguards they put in place are what we know as checks and balances – the main pillar of which being the division of government into three independent branches. Each branch then controls individual aspects of government, but also has some sort of check for the other branches. For example, the President is the Commander-in-chief of the United States military, but only Congress has the power to declare war or fund the troops. Additionally, the Congress has the power to enact legislation, but the President has the power to veto it.
Checks and balances are something we have all grown familiar with since grade school; however, while considering ratification of the Constitution, another concern of early Americans was the power of what they called “factions.” I believe one of the best definitions of a faction to be the one given by James Madison in Federalist number 10:
“By a faction I understand a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.”
Many Americans are unaware of the full extent of the threat posed by factions today. The Left itself is such a faction, and they have been largely successful in disguising their true intentions.
Over the course of the last forty or fifty years, the extreme Left or radical Left has slowly gained control of virtually every aspect of American public society (although the Left had been trying to gain control much further back than forty or fifty years). They currently control Hollywood, the music industry, the news media, various levels of government, the academic community, and virtually all levels of public education. They have cleverly used their high public influence to whittle away at traditional American society and constantly acquire more power. Their monopoly on the news media has allowed them influence elections, thereby spreading their radical minority opinions into government policy. The Left has even been successful in rewriting history and distorting our language with their monopoly on education.
Once members of the Left have reached positions of government power they have shown complete contempt and disregard for the American tradition and the Constitution at every opportunity – solely to further their own extreme agenda.
Fortunately, for us, the damage already done by the Left is reversible. The purpose of this blog is to help make the reader intimately aware of the Left’s misuse and manipulation of power and to serve as a beacon for traditional American values. Once we as a majority explicitly realize the great damage the Left has done and will continue to inflict, we can put a stop to it. In government, we can properly apply the Constitutional checks and balances designed to protect us and keep the government’s power limited. In the public square, we can demand fair representation of the news and accurate education of our youth. We can learn to see the vast amount of Left-wing propaganda for what it truly is. It is only a matter of raising public awareness, which will prove difficult (though not impossible) since the Left controls most media outlets worldwide.
Indeed, the American Left has grown into a tyrannical goliath. Slaying the goliath will not be easy, but for the moment, true power still ultimately rests with the people.
